So, U.S. football fans. We need to talk. We’re just shy of two weeks into the World Cup and there’s no nice way to say this, but we’re kind of blowing it.
I’m not talking about our team. They blew it before the tournament even started. I’m talking about our support for this international coming together of nations for friendly competition. It seems that because the U.S. isn’t competing, we’ve decided not to watch. Well, 44 percent fewer of us at least.
I’m not angry, I’m just disappointed.
But, I do understand needing to feel like you have skin in the game, so good news, I’ve found your replacement team. And guess what? They’re conveniently located and American!
Okay, Central American, but work with me here. I’m talking about Mexico, a team that is having one heck of a World Cup. And, frankly, I feel like it’s the absolute least we can do right now for our southern neighbors.
But if you’re not feeling it I have a few other American teams worth rooting for as well—Argentina, Colombia, Peru, Brazil, Panama, Costa Rica, Uruguay.
Or there’s Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, the Middle East, pick a region, pick a team, learn more about their team, learn more about their nation, and learn more about the world. This is a win, win, win all around, and you get to shout irrationally at the television when you find yourself emotionally invested in the outcome. What’s not to love?
Let’s not be “that country.” You know, the country that only cares about international cooperation and friendship when we have a team in the game. Not to worry, there’s still plenty of tournament left, so let’s get out there and give it our all.
…bi-daily smile…
