…sweeten the Deal

candy-candy-9774117-1280-1024Possessiveness is a part of human nature, maybe not the most attractive at all times, but for better of worse, it’s there.

We’ve all had that “mine” moment. If something is ours we want to make sure it’s safe, protected, and that everyone knows it.

Of course, if you want to get philosophical about it, hypothetically speaking, then you could delve into what ownership really means. Does any of us ever truly own anything or are we just borrowing?

…but that would make where I’m headed with this post (can you guess?) seem like an even larger leap than it already is. So I’ll keep that question hypothetical.

Then there are some things that just seem ridiculous to own, like words. Words that have existed for many, many years longer than you or your productivity killing app have. I’m talking to you Candy Crush.

Last week the makers of this sweet saga officially trademarked the word “candy,” meaning no other games and software, educational services, and even clothing can use the word in their product name.

I know there are larger things at play in the world of trademarks, but there’s something deliciously silly about someone owning any word, but especially candy (other than Willy Wonka of course, that would make perfect sense. Are we sure he doesn’t?).

I suppose this just confirms that you can’t have your candy and crush it to, unless it’s your name on the trademark.
