Another April Fools’ Day has come and gone. Which means it’s time to judge all of yesterday’s pranks. While there was a clear looser, the winner is a little more fuzzy.
Let’s start with the loser—Google.
Google had the rather brilliant idea to add a “Mic Drop” button next to their Google Mail “Send” button. By hitting the “Mic Drop” button, you’d automatically send, archive and insert a mic-dropping minion into your email.
Unfortunately, they forgot that not everyone reads before sending or before hitting what they think is the send button. If you didn’t see this nifty button, well that’s because Google took it down after many people meaning to send an email accidentally mic-dropped on a few emails. Some even claimed to lose their jobs over it. While I question the validity of that claim, Google did learn a valuable lesson—minions can get out of hand really fast.
Now onto the winner—Google.
Didn’t see that coming did you? Yes, their prank did somewhat backfire, and they took it down very quickly; however it had all the marks of an epic prank.
It was unexpected. People were talking about it. And while you feel for anyone who may or may not have lost their job over it, it still kind of makes you laugh. I mean how many people can claim a minion got them fired?
On that note, there’s really nothing left to say…
