…take a Whiff

wpid-Groucho-marx-glasses-nose.jpgSome days it feels like life is nothing but an endless parade of alarms, alerts, and other notifications.

Yes, they’re a convenience, but they can get a little monotonous. Lucky for us, we live in the age of innovation. It’s an age where every problem (even those we didn’t know existed) has an answer. That is why you may soon be able to set scented alerts.

A new device, aptly named Scentee, attaches to your smartphone and releases an aroma of your choosing  into the air (or, more likely your purse) for alerts. Dreams do come true.

Unfortunately there’s not yet any word on when this product will be available in the U.S., but in preparation I’ve come up with recommendations for which scent to correspond with which alert. You’re welcome:

  • Coffee: Not a bad way to start your day.
  • Jasmine: A nice soothing accompaniment to those stressful deadline reminders.
  • Mint: Is that chewing gum, or did you just make a new “friend” on Facebook?
  • Bacon: Everything. I can literally not think of any alert that would not be improved by the smell of bacon.
  • Corn Soup: I got nothing.

In many ways it  makes sense as the olfactory system is most closely linked to memory. However, remembering that you have a 3 o’clock appointment 6 months ago every time you catch a whiff of strawberries might become a little tedious.

Absolutely no kidding aside, I think we all know what this means:  We are one step closer to smell-o-vision! In fact I’d like to call conspiracy on the fact that I can’t already smell whatever lovely meal [insert Food Network personality name her] is preparing today. I’m not saying it’s necessary, (truth be told,  the separation between me and the aromas on my television are a great comfort most of the time) but I bet it’s possible.

Just think of the aromas in our future…
