Sometimes in life, when you least expect it, the movie you didn't even know you were looking for comes along. Such was the case, with, "The Spy Who Dumped Me." I did not know I needed a wacky espionage romp through Europe with Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon in my life, but gosh darn it if it wasn't delightful.
...and sometimes 56% of critics don't agree with you on that, and you know what? That makes those magical moments even more special...
Audrey (Mila Kunis) and Morgan (Kate McKinnon) are best friends who, through a series of extraordinary events (spoiler: her ex-boyfriend was a spy), go from their "ordinary" lives, into the fast-paced world of international espionage with mixed success but hilarious results.
Part comedy, part action-flick, this movie checks all of the summer cinema boxes with a zaniness that is all its own, which is provided for the most part, of course, by Kate McKinnon.
This movie absolutely soars when she's given free reign...which from the looks of the final result, was quite a bit. Her Morgan is the outrageous, over-the-top, very close with her parents (Jane Curtin and Paul Reiser), circus enthusiast yin to Audrey's much subtler yang. The balance of the two is fantastic.
Without the chemistry between Kunis and McKinnon, none of this would work. Their comedic timing is essential and masterful.
The rest of the plot is, admittedly a little spotty and jumpy (and surprisingly graphic at moments), but the two of them are magic. (I said it was delightful, not perfect.) But if you're looking for a good laugh with a side of spy work, "The Spy Who Dumped Me," is work a peek.
