March Madness means big excitement and anxiety for fans of college basketball.

Of course for those who are fully employed, the next few weeks will be a failed experiment in trying to manage work and brackets.

It turns out that March Madness costs businesses billions of dollars in lost worker productivity.

If you think that number sounds high, here’s another number— 60 million.

That’s how many employed Americans are participating in their office’s March Madness pool.

Between the longer than usual lunch hours at the local sports bar, the smartphone score checks, and the harassment of your co-workers who picked Oklahoma State to win it all; well, it’s surprising that any work gets done during mid-March to early April.

To all those who are playing along, good luck! …and Go SLU!
