Synchronised swimming has long bore the brunt of the Olympics fan’s jokes.
Known more for its frilly costumes and Saturday Night Live sketch, than its aquatic acrobatics, this demanding, all-female (sorry guys) sport has gotten little respect since its debut at the 1984 Olympics.
Despite its polished appearance, synchronised swimming takes great skill and strength. It’s not easy looking happy and graceful when you’ve been holding your breath for the better part of five minutes.
Today, the women’s duets final takes place. So, while it may be tempting (and easy) to make fun of the swim caps, nose clips and general pagentry, why not give it a chance.
At the very least, you can sound a bit more educated (throw in some terms like “deckwork”, “back layout”, “scull” and “eggbeater”) the next time you mock this great sport.
