Happy Emmy Sunday! A lot has changed in the world of television over the past few years, but one thing remains the same - our love of a good story.
Tonight, we celebrate another season of great storytelling on the small screen. Yes, there will be winners and those who go home emptyhanded, but at the end of the day (or evening), it's about recognizing the work of this past year.
With that in mind, we're going to completely contradict that sentiment and make some Emmys predictions. Why? Because it's a tradition and it makes things a little more interesting...
Outstanding Comedy Series:
Zer: "Fleabag"- It is the year of Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and I am here for it. Between "Fleabag" and "Killing Eve" she has 20 Emmy Nominations (creative Emmys count). "Fleabag" is comedic perfection in a neat, half-hour package. It deserves all the awards, but this one will do.
Stephanie: "Fleabag" - Honestly, I'll be shocked if "Veep" doesn't win, given that it's the Emmys last chance to award a show they've awarded heavily during its seven-season run (with good reason). But I also think season two of " Fleabag " is one of the best seasons of television ever, so here we are...
Outstanding Drama Series:
Zer: "Killing Eve"- This will be really impressive if there's an upset, but I am fully aware of the power of the "Thrones" and HBO. The sheer scale of " Game of Thrones" and what they were able to accomplish over the entire series makes them worthy of this honor. However, based purely on recent accomplishments " Killing Eve " should win.
Stephanie: "Killing Eve" - There's no doubt in my mind that "Killing Eve," told a better story in its nominated second season, but "Game of Thrones" did achieve water cooler television in a world of streaming schedules. Really, everyone wins either way...
Outstanding Television Movie:
Zer: "King Lear"- It's become a bit of a tradition to make predictions in at least one category that I have no right to be predicting. This is that category. I haven't seen any of these. Not one. So, why "King Lear"? Why not?
Stephanie: "Black Mirror: Bandersnatch" - I mean, how cool would it be if a choose your own adventure story won an Emmy. Also, for all its weirdness (nightmare-inducing level weird) "Black Mirror" has achieved truly excellent levels of storytelling.
Outstanding Limited Series (formerly known as the Mini-Series):
Zer: "Fosse/Verdon"- Michelle Williams, that's all.
Stephanie: "Chernobyl" - This is a tough category. Michelle Williams will undoubtedly win for her role in "Fosse/Verdon," but limited series, I'm inclined to go with HBO, meaning "Sharp Objects" is also a strong contender.
Outstanding Variety Series (Talk):
Zer: "Full Frontal with Samantha Bee"- Why? Because it's time, but also because Ms. Bee does one of the best jobs on late-night of actually questioning the ridiculousness on both sides of the aisle.
Stephanie: "Full Frontal with Samantha Bee" - As I mentioned earlier this week, I'm a big fan of most of this category, it's also time it saw a shakeup.
