Officially, summer is still about a week away, but here in the great white north of middle America it arrived a few weeks early. As of this past week, the Great Lakes were declared ice free.
Yes, that’s right, winter is officially over!
For those who haven’t experienced a winter or spring along the Great Lakes, mid-June is late for the ice to clear.
This year, the lakes’ ice coverage reached 92 percent. Lake Michigan alone reached 93 percent. While we may grumble about our cold winters most years, this year was one for the record books.
Now that it’s finally a not so distant memory, we can relax and enjoy the last few days of spring, and look forward to summer.
Although, be warned Great Lakes swimmers, it may not be frozen anymore, but water temperatures this summer will be colder than usual. So maybe keep that parka out for a few more weeks. You’ll need it on the beach.
