Today, news has quickly spread across the web about the successful firing of the first printed firearm. Whether your first reaction is, “that’s cool,” or “what’s a 3D printer?” the fact is, it’s a little scary.
3D printing is still in its infancy, in terms of availability to the general public. Cheaper printers are still priced in the thousands.
Yet we already have individuals looking to turn this technological innovation into a weapon. In this specific instance we have a group of people looking to make printable firearms available to everyone (with access to a 3D printer). Yes, that’s right, they’ve shared their blueprints online.
That means anyone with access to a 3D printer could legally obtain a gun, even if they are not legally able to purchase one. It’s a frightening thought.
It’s the kind of thought you’d hope would lead to some change.
We can only hope it won’t result in more regulation on things that really shouldn’t need to be regulated (3D printers) instead of the things that should be regulated (firearms).
