Some dear friends of ours here in Hawaii started what’s affectionately known as the “Get Lost” hiking group before they left the island – it was called that because of a few, ahem, scenic route hikes taken but still, we love the idea of getting lost in the wonders that are Hawaii. Anyway, the name and the group are still around, so, before Scott had to take off for the mainland to rescue our cats and get them prepped for travel, we were able to go hiking with our old group around Koko Crater Botanical Gardens.
The gardens lie at the foot of the mountain known as Koko Head, another volcanic crater similar to Diamond Head. To ascend it, you have to climb some pretty crazy steps, which is why that climb is on our Hawaii Bucket List. I want to do it again, mostly to say I did it. But it’s a beast!
Anyway, there are several trails that loop through the gardens. They’re an easy, fairly flat walk with just a few climbs, but it’s a great place to come in, walk around in the sun, enjoy the shade here and there, and marvel at the amazing plant species that Hawaii can support.
You’ll notice as you scroll through these pictures that there are a huge number of different ecosystems present, just as there are a huge number of different ecosystems on the island. Oahu itself cycles from rainforest to temperate to desert, depending on where you are in relation to the Ko’Olau or Waianae Mountains {the two main mountain ranges on the island}. Basically, if you’re in the leeward side of the mountains, you’re in lush tropical wetland. If you’re on the windward side, you’re in sand-blasted and wind-blasted desert. There are exceptions, but that’s the general rule.
I was amazed to find the temperate cactus forest thriving so well here in Oahu. There were really some amazing specimens, though I didn’t particularly care to investigate them too closely. That’s the advantage of having a telephoto lens.
You might recognize this particular rum cherry tree shot from my website banner…
I loved having the chance not only to spend time with friends from our hiking group, but to see more of the beautiful things Oahu has to offer. I didn’t even know the botanical gardens were here until we decided to hike through them! We’re going to have to come back after I’ve bought a few new lenses and things…
