I am hell-bent on getting super duper, borderline-obsessive organized this week which means reflecting on my productivity from 2011 including my travel writing. Last year, when I quit my full-time job teaching and transitioned to a freelance writer, I dove in without thinking about time tracking devices, best ways to stay organized, etc. etc. I just scrambled day to day, trying to find writing jobs however, and as many as possible. I didn't really stop to figure out what I wanted to write about.
Fortunately, I was VERY lucky to stumble onto a few great writing gigs that had to deal with travel, one of my sincere passions in life. Through Media Bistro, I was hired by Forbes Travel aka Startle.com to work on descriptions about Hilton Head and Kiawah Island. I also promoted from a regular contributor that was paid per click on my articles for Yahoo to a Featured Contributor for domestic travel. Now, I get paid to write three travel articles per month about domestic destinations which is an awesome outlet for writing about the travel I do for pleasure. I also write articles about Savannah for South Magazine, which usually involves profiles about local bars and restaurants.
I was also invited to New Orleans by the local tourism in coordination with a marketing company to come for a weekend which was amazing and led to me meeting some other great writers. A weekend of being shown the town by locals, hitting some of the best restaurants, bars, sights, and cultural offerings? Yes, please (definitely hoping for my invites like this in the future).
Anyway, I just want to thank everyone who has read these pieces. I hope to do a lot more travel writing and blogging in 2012 :) Please browse through my collection of travel writing from 2011 and comment about which articles you like the best so I can write more articles like that!
Writers, please feel free to share your own travel writing links in the comments below! I write about writers to watch on my Wednesday blog posts, so I may end up featuring your work in an upcoming post :)
