Traveling to the ‘Burg…

Posted on the 27 June 2012 by Drowqueen @theburnedhand

My last post was just how we spent our Friday…it was a fun-filled car ride I can tell you that.  On Saturday we went to VA Beach for my friend’s wedding at a local yacht club, and then on Sunday we woke up only to get in the car once more.  Whew.  We had a brunch reservation at Seasons in Williamsburg to celebrate my grandparents 65th wedding anniversary.  It was a very hot day, but we did take a quick stroll around so I could take my daughter to the outdoor hat stand.  She saw it from a distance and had this idea that she needed a bonnet, so off we went.  On the way we passed a few things:

Traveling to the ‘Burg…It was so hot the poor docents were sweating through their colonial costumes…so I didn’t bug them for photos.  I got this guy instead:

Traveling to the ‘Burg…Which started a discussion on how nasty the streets would have been back then and how horrible the smell would have been on a 95 degree summer day.  Ha.  Perhaps I shouldn’t mention the conversations I have with my kids…moving on.  We stopped at one of my favorite things to look at, the typical English garden:

Traveling to the ‘Burg…Since we have a rather large backyard, I wanted to create something like this in the backyard one day and love the idea of pathways through rows of wild blooms.  Sigh.  I have been planning this for a few years now…in my head it looks great.  Side note: I love gardens and drew many different landscape plans as a kid, and I still do when I plan out my flower beds.  So by now my tiny one had almost reached her destination.  The hats:

Traveling to the ‘Burg…She is the one in front and my oldest is behind her…I told her that they were expensive and probably only really cost like less than a $1.00 to make a straw hat.  I might have exaggerated slightly, but a lesson in economics was needed.  The crack-a-lackin folks selling them thought $40 was a good price.  I laughed.  Not in their faces mind you, I mean, it’s not their fault that Colonial Williamsburg wants to make a buck or forty; however, I was not going to pay that price.  I don’t know if you are aware of the laws of kids, but if you have two of them, the other one keeps track.  Anyway, we moved inside to the shade and there were some cute fans.  They “only” cost $9.95 per fan.  Since it was hot and the great Nana was there, she shelled out $20 for two fans on which was written the moral compass.  The cute little guy behind the register was very pleasant with his faux accent and told my girls that while everyone else saw the design on the back of the fan, the inside was just for them to remind ladies how to act.  I secretly was laughing very loud at this point, but had to behave in public.  Ahem.  Those colonists sure were funny.
