It’s a sad day for fans of the weekly printed periodical.
Today, Newsweek, the magazine which has been delivering the printed news every week for nearly 80 years, announced that as of Dec. 31, 2012 it will cease its printing operations in the US.
The magazine will be redirecting its efforts to the digital version of its magazine. Yes, fellow printed word fans, we lost another one to the tablet.
Before the panic attack sets in, and you find yourself comparing tablet prices (the Nexus looks nice), let’s take a breath.
It may seem like the end of the world (as we know it), but let’s take a second to keep this in perspective.
After all, change is nature (or is nature change?). It does not make sense or serve any purpose to try and live in the past, so we have to keep moving forward(the iPad seems incredibly overpriced).
Sure, for those of us keeping up the good fight against the death of the printed word, this is a big loss, but it’s not the end (or is the Kindle Fire a better choice?).
We do still have plenty of other publications that are still in print.
True, Newsweek has the potential to make their magazine even more convenient and immediate by adopting the all digital version, but we will stay strong (isn’t there an iPad mini coming out soon?).
We will not be drawn in by the glossy, hd screens and other features of the every increasing number of tablets available.
And we will certainly not be tricked by your pandering facts on the eco-friendly benefits of switching to digital media. However strong and valid your arguments we will hold fast.
Newsweek, it’s been real. We’ll miss your weekly arrival in our mail boxes.
