...of course there's a bright side...

So…not the situation we hoped for.

I’m sure there’s plenty of disbelief (mixed with a fair amount of eternal optimism) floating around Cardinal Nation this morning.

It’ s only natural.  Seriously.  As fans of the greatest team in baseball we expect these games to go our way.  Those errors and poor judgement calls happen to other teams…not us…not Pujols (and the unfortunate Master Allen).  Things will be better next time.

…but seriously, it is only natural…assuming you’re human.

It’s called the “illusion of validity.”  You should read about it.  It’s at the other end of the link below (the New York Times‘ one).

In this situation it means that our brains expect events to unfold a certain way.  In the case of Cardinals fans it means that regardless of what events have unfolded, if we expect things to go a certain way (Cardinals World Series victory), we will continue to believe that (and that will make it happen).

Nothing can shake our confidence.

Of course in the case of Cardinals fans we have ten previous championships, over 100 years of franchise history, Albert Pujols, Rally Squirrel and Torty Craig to back it up.  Call that an illusion.

Call it intuition, call it delusional, call it stubbornness, or call it the unstoppable optimism of Cardinal baseball fans, but don’t rain on my parade.

GO CARDS! Happy Flight!
