Following the success of “Shrek,” and the subsequent release of not one or two, but three sequels; many of the most devout fairytale fans are a little burnt out.
Despite these seemingly insurmountable odds,”Puss In Boots” manages to stand on its own two feet.
Directed by Chris Miller, this prequel to Puss’ entrance into the Shrek series surprises with it’s range of humor, action and, yes, cuteness. It’s a sweet and not overly complicated story.
Puss (Antonio Banderas), an outlaw is looking for his next job at a local dive, when he hears of fellow bandits, Jack (Billy Bob Thornton) and Jill (Amy Sedaris), and their magic beans.
In the middle of his attempt to steal the beans he is intercepted by Kitty Softpaws (Salma Hayek). Both come out empty handed.
Kitty, it turns out, is working for Puss’ former friend Humpty Alexander Dumpty (Zach Galifianakis), the rotten egg that put Puss on the wrong side of the law.
Humpty convinces Puss that he is no longer a bad egg, and the three work together to steal the magic beans and claim the treasure to which they lead.
There are no surprises in this tale (or tail), the bad guys are bad, the good are good, and the morally ambiguous turn out to be good at heart (or yolk).
Along with some sword fighting and large-scale battle scenes, we’re also treated to a feline dance-off. And, yes, it is as chock full of kitty puns and Zorro references as you would imagine.
To put it simply, “Puss in Boots,” is the purrfect blend of humor, action and “awww” moments
