Greetings from day two of the arctic tundra formerly known as the upper Midwest. Seeing as the mercury has not seen the northern side of 0 for a few days, it seems like a good time to discuss global warming.
It turns out, it’s still a thing. Although, please refrain from calling it “global warming.” It prefers to go by its new name — climate change. It causes less confusion.
According to experts, this apocalyptic “polar vortex” is just a short blast cold ahead of a future full of heat waves. If that sounds like a bold statement with no basis in facts, consider the fact that over the past 40 years, winters have warmed by over half a degree every decade. That’s roughly two and a half degrees total…and really doesn’t sound that impressive.
But the point is the heat is coming, so enjoy the cold while it lasts. It may feel like it’s trying to burn off your face and anything else you weren’t smart enough to cover, but you’ll miss it during the three month long heat wave this summer.
