“We’ve Lost a Great Artist, Not a Caricature”: Thanks, Amy Winehouse

Goodbye to the vocal talents of soulful British singer Amy Winehouse.  Her delightful, distinctive voice was right up there with the best.  Her music ironically ushered many of us through dark days even if she was notorious for having too many of her own.  In the words of Chris Wilman, “We’ve lost a great artist, not a caricature.”

I wish a young person’s talents could become widely appreciated without the trappings of celebrity and fame with all its pressures and excesses: money, paparazzi, leeches, scrutiny, fan worship, addictions, and dependencies to keep up with the demand to constantly perform.  How well would any of us handle worldwide fame at 19, 20, or even now?

Regardless of the cause of her death, I hope Ms. Winehouse has found peace and rest. God bless her memory despite her personal demons (like the rest of us). The music she shared was truly a blessing to many.
