While many eyes were on the scandal in Washington this week, Broadway was embroiled in some drama of its own. Unfortunately, it was the off-stage kind, starring a casting change in this season’s most nominated show — “Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812.”
I won’t go into details here, because in my opinion, people discussing the situation without knowing all of the facts is what led to the eventual outcome (among other things of course), and as informed as I try to be, I accept that I do not know the whole story.
What I will say is that it would be a real shame if this show suffered because of the lack of consideration of a few. It’s one of the most different shows on Broadway in a long while with one of the best ensemble casts you will ever see. They also had absolutely nothing to do with what happened this week.
As I mentioned, it was the most nominated show of the season, and while it was overlooked for “Dear Evan Hansen” more than a few times on Tony night, it was by and far the most critically-acclaimed show of the year.
Smaller shows like this have to work their butts off to get to the Broadway and don’t draw the same tourist crowd as long-running favorites like “Chicago” or “Phantom of the Opera” or “The Lion King,” which are fantastic, spectacles in their own right. But, if you happen to be heading to NYC, don’t forget to take a look beyond those staples (maybe even Off-Broadway?), there’s great entertainment to be had. And if you’re headed to Broadway soon, give Comet a visit. I promise you’ll leave inspired.
