Writer Wednesdays: Diablo Cody (aka Brooke Busey): Juno's Flat-Out Hilarious Writer

Posted on the 12 October 2011 by Shawndrarussell

I'm not going to blog much about the great stuff that you already know Diablo Cody does like Juno, which was brilliant on its own and brought to life magnificiently by Ellen Page--an example of perfect casting if you ask me. Or The United States of Tara, one of the most innovative shows I have ever watched while also exhausting me just thinking about trying to write the episodes since essentially mini episodes have to be built around the schizophrenic main character (another example of perfect casting with Toni Collette nailing every episode I have seen.
Obviously the girl is talented. Obviously she can write and is wicked funny and sarcastic. I feel like I would feel very uncool and too proper around because she's just so darn quirky and interesting.
But I also really enjoy reading her blog, called Honest to Blr. She doesn't write a ton about writing, or Hollywood really, but instead just spits out tidbits about her life and day with posts that make me laugh (I bet Cody doesn't use dorky lol as incessantly as I do).
For me, her blog shows me that a writer can be (and probably should be) defined by their personality. This fact may seem obvious, but it is reassuring to me that I don't have to be anything but me and if I am true to my personality, then my writing will be consistent and authentic. The same voice you get from her blog is the same voice you get on her bigger projects. She is who she is and doesn't appear to have to cultivate her writing or portray some image. She is just herself, and that self is pretty darn entertaining.
