Writer Wednesdays: What If We Stopped Chasing the American Dream?

Posted on the 13 January 2012 by Shawndrarussell
So today, I need your help. My entry titled "If You Follow the American Dream, You Will Be Happy" (note sarcasm here) is up for a PRIZE! It would be my FIRST contest win, so I would be thrilled if you would take a minute to read the article and if you like it, please hit the "like," Tweet, or Facebook the piece. THANK YOU!
I am super excited not only about the possibility of winning, but the message that this piece emphasizes: We should all focus on chasing our own dreams, NOT some pre-described American Dream that promises an easy retirement that frankly, might not ever happen. So, if we have to work longer, why not do it doing something you absolutely love, that doesn't feel like work?
That is the realization I had about six months ago, and now, I am a full-time freelance writer, and I feel that I could do this forever. Retirement is no longer this looming deadline that I am counting down towards. Instead, I don't see how I will ever be able to write everything that I want to write. I have an idea box FULL of ideas. And I want everyone to feel this excited about their careers too.
I am currently pitching my nonfiction book proposal about this topic, and I have about 15 chapters left. If I don't find an agent or publisher by the time I finish, I will be diving into the self-publishing world. I'm excited and nervous to see where this project will go.
