Best childhood memory.
A book is a set of printed sheets of paper held together between two covers. The sheets of paper are covered with text and sometimes include illustrations… or at least that’s what Wikipedia tells me.
To me, a book is much more than print on paper. A good book transports me from my own life and immerses me in the lives of its characters. Some of these characters, such as Jane Eyre, have become lifelong friends. I have a long history with Jane. We met for the first time when I was nine years old. Since then I’ve fallen into the habit of revisiting her at least once every year. The habit has become a much anticipated and longed for tradition.
When I was a little girl, my mother used to read to me for hours on end every night. The walls of my bedroom disappeared and I was carried into another world as I listened to her melodious voice. Those nights are my best childhood memories.
