A Letter to my son Luigi on his 4th birthday

Dear Luigi Miguel,

As February, the LOVE month comes and the time to celebrate your birthday nears, I am filled with such joy and pride to know that I get to be your mama! You are truly a special gift from God that I patiently and sometimes not so patiently waited on for nearly 5 years. Your arrival changed my life forever and I am forever grateful for that change!

A Letter to my son Luigi on his 4th birthdayToday, you said "Mama, T-shirt. Palit. Basa. Dumi" I love how you say those words because they remind me that you are still small, and learning. You are beginning to spell and read some simple words, and one of your favorite games to play is to pick a letter and we say all the words we can think of that start with that letter.  Such a big boy, putting together so many complex ideas and making sense of it all.

You love holding a pencil, ball pen, crayons. I have a little "Picasso" in the house! You really enjoy your time with those new motor skills.

You also love reading books. Going to a library or even just simply going to a bookshop seems like a paradise for you.

You continue to be a reserved and sensitive boy. Going to the barber this year was an ordeal, to say the least.  New experiences leave you clammed up and glued to my side, usually saying "I don't like it!".  You want your Mama when you are scared or sad or hurting or unsure.  You may seem too big to wrestle with some of these things, but you are still too little to yet understand that taking risks is necessary for growth and development in life. I hope I can help you to trust yourself, trust your gut, and trust God with all you do.  I hope I can also help you to learn to challenge yourself to just try something new, even if it feels scary.  Risks are necessary in life sometimes, little boy, and sometimes when you try you learn that it wasn't so scary after all.

I love to watch you sing and dance, always entertaining those around you. I love to spend mommy-son dates with you. You make the best adventure buddy and the greatest bedtime snuggling buddy there is to have.

A Letter to my son Luigi on his 4th birthdayMy wisest words I give to you now…
If someone is mean to you – love them back, no matter what. Eventually your kindness will win them over.  If someone teases you for how you look, remember that you are a beautiful son of THE King, fearfully and wonderfully made. When you feel like you don’t measure up, remember that you are loved beyond measure. When you are fearful, call upon the Lord he will rescue you and bring peace to your mind. Listen carefully for the Lord’s voice, because he is speaking. And always choose to be sweet, kind, gentle, loving, obedient, and respectful – this will get you far in life

I pray for you daily, even when you don’t hear me – I am praying for you. My prayer for you is that you will always be a leader, but not just any leader – the leader of the good kids; the one that leads people in the right direction, to make the right decisions, to be obedient and respectful in all areas of life.
