Indian Prime Minister's Swach Bharat campaign kick-started a few days back. Some appreciated, some hued over photo-ops and some were just mesmerized by God's work for the country. While all this was just one's right in a democracy, what most of us missed was following and practicing the initiative, every single day, every single moment.
I shall blatantly generalize, we Indians have become conditioned to litter. We've grown up around litter everywhere around us, so much, that it doesn't even bother us to see some plastics and left-over spilled on the street. What is more saddening is that we are not even bothered when we see someone littering on the road. The worst isn't over yet. The worst is, we don't even realize the heinous crime we are committing while we litter on the streets of our country. I shall not exclude myself too from the generalization. Funnily, we are the same Indians who go to different country for a summer vacation, are awed by the cleanliness there, throw everything in the garbage, crib on the social media how India is so dirty as compared to that particular country, come back to India and BAM! There we go almost on a littering spree because, 'It feels like home in India, da!'. Is this what you do at your home too? Umm.
I wouldn't go too far but I shall talk about my neighbors littering habit that annoys us way too much that we end up cleaning their litter too! My neighbor has this habit of cleaning their house, collecting the dust in a paper and throwing it in the lobby. While the most reasonable solution could be to tell them to not to do that, we are too sure, it would end up in a dirty fight between two neighbors. So what do we do? We end up cleaning their lobby too, because it dirties our lobby as well! One of the worst cons of living in a flat. While I write this and share on my Facebook, I am really expecting my neighbor to read this there and for a change, change themselves! I am pretty sure that me and my family are not the only victims of such people. Such a mentality depicts how selfish one could be. You could keep your home clean then why not your surrounding? And by keeping the surrounding clean, I really do not mean that you litter your shit in region which probably doesn't come under your area of concern. Clicking photos with a jhaadu in your hand or being awe-struck by Government's campaign won't do any help till one takes the ownership of their right to the street!
I am really proud of Strepsils, a sore throat lozenge brand, which took up the responsibility of spreading awareness about Clean India through various social media channels like Facebook, Twitter and Blogging mediums with #AbMontuBolega campaign, where they invite every citizen to raise for a cleaner India.
