Anna’s Taqueria

I thought for What I Ate Wednesday I would talk about a great Mexican restaurant Vinnie and I went to recently, Anna’s Taqueria. It is a great place to go for a quick, healthy, satisfying meal.

A little while ago, Abby invited me to come to Anna’s Taqueria  restaurant and enjoy some of their delicious meals. I brought Vinnie along and we were really excited to try Anna’s  healthy options beyond their signature burritos. Let me tell you, we tried a lot of them!

We started with chips, salsa and guac. The guac was really good. I ended up putting it on almost everything that came out!

We tried the Veggie Tacos – corn tortilla topped with fresh grilled veggies (choice of lightly seasoned onions, broccoli, corn, zucchini, squash, eggplant, red onions, sweet potatoes and seasonally available vegetables like Brussels sprouts), handmade pico de gallo and beans.

I really liked this one, but Vinnie liked the Tacos al Pastor which is a corn tortilla topped with shaved rotisserie-cooked pork, pineapple, red onion & cilantro and drizzled with spicy guacamole and tomato-based, Mexican-spiced sauce.

Tacos are great for portion control. The corn tortillas are lower in fat/carbs than their flour counterparts, and they are gluten free.

The restaurant also offers whole wheat tortillas for its burritos and quesadillas. For vegetarians, there’s veg-friendly rice (not cooked in chicken broth) and sliced avocado for vegans (the guac uses sour cream). Anna’s dishes are completely customizable – orders are more like open conversations with the folks on the line so customers can let them know if they want more or less of anything, ask questions, etc. [think Chipotle]

Anna’s TaqueriaWe had to try one of their signature burrito’s while there and it was everything you could ever want in a burrito! You can order them in regular or Super-sized tortillas and they come stuffed with any combination of rice, beans , cheese, protein filling of your choice  and toppings. We went with the grilled chicken burrito with rice, black beans, lettuce and pico de gallo.

The Mexican Plate was the last thing we tried. The chicken was so good. It was perfectly cooked and flavorful. I honestly think Vinnie and I said “mmmm this is so good” a million times! The plate consisted of a bed of rice topped with choice of filling, beans, corn tortillas, salsa and hot sauce.

To wash down all this amazing food we tried two signature Mexican drinks. The Horchata which is a refreshing drink made fresh daily from ground almonds, rice milk and cinnamon. And the Jamacia which is also made fresh daily and brewed from hibiscus petals; often called a Mexican fruit punch. The middle drink is a classic Coca Cola from a glass bottle.

The restaurant was packed but you would of never known with the incredible service and attention to the customers. Anna’s Taqueria is a great place to eat in or take out with great portable food options making it a great option for healthful fueling up pre- or post-workout. We will be back!

Thank you to Anna’s Taqueria for the hospitality and good food. To find a location near you, click here: http://www.annastaqueria.com/locations.htm.
