Are you happy to change the clocks ?

I’m not sure I am.

On one hand, yes of course I’m happy that summer’s coming, that we can go out without preparing for a polar expedition beforehand and that we will have many more hours of glorious sunshine every day (By the way I live in France not the UK, in case you were wondering how I knew about the glorious sunshine) .

However none of that actually has anything to do with putting the clock forward an hour, does it? I know people don’t enjoy changing the clocks in autumn, but I’m not naïve enough to think that if we don’t put the clocks back in autumn we’ll still be able to enjoy fifteen hours of daylight all through the winter, I’ve heard that the tilt of the earth plays a role in that kind of thing.

However I’m just not very comfortable with this whole “playing about with time” thing. Maybe being a teacher means I’m used to my day being marked out by the bell (actually ours sound more like a lost child in Tesco’s announcement that an actual bell), but it just feels that we’re messing with things beyond our control, it’s like deciding not to have a Tuesday next week. Leap year is irritating enough, we have to work an extra day for free, but taking away time is just not fair.

Added to which it’ll be dark when I go to work again, the children won’t go to bed on time, and worse still – neither will I, resulting in a house full of grumpy people who won’t be hungry at mealtimes and won’t want to wake up in the mornings.

The dog doesn’t like his dinnertime being messed with, on farms they have less milk the first couple of days and there’s always one numpty who will use it as an excuse to be late to school on Monday.

On the bright side those who work nights work an hour less, and the clock on the oven will show the correct time at last, for the next six months that is.

What about you, for or against??
