I have purchases several "Umbrella Mugs" at Estate Sales lately. I've actually found myself collecting memorabilia when others are selling it off. Today, I breakfasted with Christo & Virginia Woolf. Rather lovely.
Do you remember Christo and his Umbrellas?
Probably not unless you were in my part of the country back in 1991, It was a difficult time for me and probably not the best for the artist as well, but here in Bakersfield we have some shadows lurking about which remind us.
Yesterday I had lunch downtown near a mural that remembers the Umbrellas and I noticed a particular pattern in the paint and I wondered, “Are those intentionally painted or are they evidence of the elements that have beat down the mural since it was painted?”
I walked along in my curiosity and found paint peeling, rather dense, in some areas of the mural.
I knew I would be crazy busy for the rest of the day and into tomorrow as well, so I took some photos, figuring this was my invitation to flow.
I actually find them interesting.
This is the spot with the most peeling. I wonder what can be done to stop it, if anything?
The painting reminds me how art frequently begets art. The more artists create and interact, the more art is born. It fascinates and inspires me.
