"Art is Not Meant to Be Created in Stolen Moments Only" - Clarissa Pinkola Estes - Quote, Prompts & More for Your Blogging, Writing & Creative Inspiration

Posted on the 13 July 2014 by Juliejordanscott @juliejordanscot

You have found your way to the Passionate Writer - a series of prompts, quotes and more for the writer (or person who wants to write) with more passion. More details are below today's inspiration.

You are welcome here!

Image Prompt: Focus on one section of this photo for three minutes. Next, free write for three minutes, using the image as your inspiration. What is the image telling you?

 Quote:

“I've seen women insist on cleaning everything in the house before they could sit down to write... and you know it's a funny thing about housecleaning... it never comes to an end. Perfect way to stop a woman. A woman must be careful to not allow over-responsibility (or over-respectabilty) to steal her necessary creative rests, riffs, and raptures. She simply must put her foot down and say no to half of what she believes she "should" be doing. Art is not meant to be created in stolen moments only.”

Clarissa Pinkola Estes

 Questions:

What approach do you use for “scheduling” your creativity?

Take a few moments to quietly (and without judgment) consider your relationship with responsibility and respectability. What do you make your responsibility mean? How important do you actually make respectability mean? I know a friend who can talk about how independent and free-spirited is, but her actions show how attached she is to being seen as extra-respectable via another person’s perspective. Be completely honest and write freely about these two terms which impact both men and women and creative expression.

 Lists:

Make a list of 5 - 10 things you can set aside in order to invest a few moments in your creativity.

Make a list of 3 - 5 things you are not ready to set aside yet.

Bonus: write about an item from each of these lists using free writing and watch what shows up on the page. What is it there to tell you?

 Conventional Writing Prompt

I’ve had enough: I am going to put my foot down, (finally!) and….

If I treated my creativity the way I treat my “other stuff” I would be surprised to discover…..
