This morning our usual barrista greeted us with her ever-present smile on her face.
It was Monday morning of a bright shiny new week. She said to me when I was alone, “You look great today, so much better than last week!”
I could choose to get offended that she thought I looked lousy last week. (I did!) I could worry about my appearance only getting better from here on out and what would happen if I started feeling and looking bad again. Would I feel compelled to stay away so as not to disappoint either her or myself? I could also just take it with a smile and say thank you, which is what I did.
I have known this woman for years. She knew us when Samuel was a little guy and she has loved him the whole time. She is one of those people in the community who you don’t need to explain, “He has autism, give him a break please? Just a little?”
She automatically knows and responds to him as fits him best. I have learned she also knows how to respond to me as suits me.
Last week I felt discouraged and sad. We hadn’t seen our lovely barrista in a while. We were there for the first time since my surgery to remove my melanoma. Even though it had been four weeks since surgery, I had a “down turn” sort of week. I was busy yet I felt unproductive, I was surrounded by people yet I felt lonely.
I slept a lot to escape.
Over the weekend I was so busy following up other people’s requests I got very little done. What I did get done, though, built momentum. I was able to literally take that momentum and ride its wave into today. Believe me, riding momentum feels much better than being unhappy because you feel lousy and you didn’t know healing would take so long and being micromanaged literally makes your skin crawl.
Monday: the only management I receive is from myself. Monday: my to-do list is filled with light and love. Monday: I am so glad to have met it with happy feet. Monday: I love you!
