This week, Tucson Songstress friends, I have decided to treat my Top 10 Tuesday music activity a little differently than I have previously. Rather than reinvent the wheel, I am going to refer you all to another blog. When seeking out some ideas for hand bell activities, I found a couple of absolutely fun and engaging activities created by a music therapist in Tallahassee, FL. I so enjoyed reading these activities that I have to pass them along to you. So, forgive me for not creating the activity myself, but these are as good as you can get.
The blog name is called “Beyond the Music.” Here is the website: http://beyondthemusicmt.blogspot.com
Before heading to the site, you will need a couple of items:
–1 set of 8-note hand bells. Here are a picture of them:

You can find them on Amazon.com for purchase. Click HERE to view them.
(2) You will also need a recording of the song “Lucky” by Jason Mraz featuring Colbie Caillet. Click HERE to go to Youtube to hear it.
Personally, I think this activity is best for older school-aged children (3rd grade) through middle schoolers.
To summarize the activity, “Beyond the Music” has the student listen to “Lucky”, provides hand bell easy-to-follow sheet music and instruction how to play along to the song. I think the modern song and the gratifying success of adding pleasing sounds to it will really engage any young person wishing to play along. Here is the link to view “Beyond the Music’s” Jason Mraz hand bell activity: http://beyondthemusicmt.blogspot.com/2011/06/jason-mraz-group-handbell-activity.html
The site also provides the same great hand bell activity to Yael Naim’s song, “New Song.” Click HERE to listen to it on Youtube. Here is “Beyond the Music’s” Yael Naim hand bell activity: http://beyondthemusicmt.blogspot.com/2010/05/new-soul-on-handbells.html
I know you and your child will have a blast listening to modern pop music together and adding your own cool music to these already fun songs. Kudos to “Beyond the Music” for putting it all together. Enjoy!
