My new “Birks”
I have been having some really awful foot pain over the last several weeks, and the doctor diagnosed it as plantar fasciitis. It’s a horrible debilitating feeling in your heel, and the first couple of steps in the morning when you get out of bed are just excruciating. The doctor gave me a cortisone shot, but unfortunately, it doesn’t seem that it has worked.
As I was leaving his office, the doctor (a podiatrist) told me that I should go home, throw out every single pair of shoes that I own and go out and buy new ones that only have amazing arch support. “What about sandals?” I asked. “The desert is hot, and I live in them all summer long.” “Birkenstocks,” he answered. “They’re the only sandals anyone should ever wear.”
I had a pair of Birkenstocks when I was in my 20′s, but when I graduated from college and became a professional, I decided it was time to get rid of them. Birkenstocks are for hippies…not for professional sophisticated women. At least – that’s the stigma that goes along with them.
On top of that…I play guitar for a living. I teach 70′s camps songs, so I’m already working against the stigma of being a peace-loving, patchouli smelling, granola type. I just want cute shoes to “dress against type” as an old college friend puts it so eloquently.
But now…the pain in my heel is significant enough that I have succumbed to crunchy “Birks,” and I must admit to all of you, they feel pretty darn amazing.
So today, I am rockin’ a new pair of Boogie Shoes. That is why my song of the day is from KC and the Sunshine Band. Peace, love and happiness to you all!
