Creative Challenges, 31 Poems in 31 Days, #OctPoWriMo, Edna St Vincent Millay and Me

Posted on the 01 October 2014 by Juliejordanscott @juliejordanscot

I am a nut for creative challenges. Process October 2013

I can’t seem to stay away from them and when I do try to stay away they haunt me, like Edna St. Vincent Millay haunted me until I made it to visit Steepletop, finally, in 2012. Come to think of it, she still haunts me but it is more like we walk around holding hands rather than her pushing against my shoulder all the time.

I digress.

With October comes the poetic creative challenge OctPoWriMo and yes, I am writing prompts again this year and I am also challenging myself to grow as a poet via consciously studying successful, journal published poets.

Each day I will write poetry and read poetry consciously in a way this month will continue to fine-tune my skills and wordcraft. At the end I will have written at least 31 poems and I will also have read at least 31 poems.

I have chosen The Best American Poetry, 2014 as my text and will write my discoveries in this blog as well as share my poems in my poetry blog. Today I am studying "Orpheous" the classic poem by Muriel Rukeyser as well as "These Hands, if Not Gods" by Natalie Diaz on page 36 of my text for October. Diaz, by the way, was born in the unlikely spot of Needles, California, in 1978 - the first full year I lived in California.

8659847270_ff3a7f236a_zI will be sharing prompts on Tuesdays and Thursdays over on OctPoWriMo.com

With all that said - let’s welcome October in whatever way delights us individually and then come back to the creative table refreshed and ready for whatever inspiration strikes our collective and individual fancy.

I am, as always, so grateful to know you are here - at my blog - reading.
