Quote
“Deliberately seek opportunities for kindness, sympathy and patience.”
Evelyn Underhill
Let me say this before we get to the prompts. I have worked with writers as a writing coach for more than a decade now and one of the biggest barriers to success is the relationship we have with ourselves as creative people. I raise my hand as well - I undercut my abilities a thousand times over.
I know it is more constructive to consciously build a relationship with myself as a writer, so here is what comes next for us.
Today’s prompt is devoted to who you are as a writer in relationship with yourself.
Questions
Remember a recent opportunity for kindness in your life – what happened?
Remember a recent opportunity for sympathy – what happened?
Remember a recent opportunity for patience – what happened?
What about when you were kind, sympathetic or patient toward yourself? What happened?
Lists
Make a list of 3 to 10 ways you are the most sympathetic, kind or patient with others.
Make a list of 3 to 10 ways you are the most sympathetic, kind or patient with YOURSELF.
Traditional Writing Prompts:
I am a writer who thinks of myself as….
My writing is….
Bonus:
Come back after at least an hour and write your second draft of the two prompts, this time responding patience, kindness and sympathy for yourself as a writer.
“When I am patient with myself, I think of my writing as…”
“When I am kind to myself, I know my writing is….”
Notice the breadth and width of discovery here and come back to these prompts as often as you need. What I find over and over again there is a lot of gold when I return.
