The Diamond of the Week award goes to:
Janelle Monae
I screamed like it was Christmas when I saw Janelle Monae win a Soul Train award for Video of the Year in regards to her song, Q.U.E.E.N. She is definitely someone who truly deserves this award because not only is this song my jam (hence my previous blog post, My Lil’ Break For Today), but from what I have learned from the song is that it’s okay to be different. It’s okay to stand out and not feel like you have to get your ass injected with collagen with hair weave down to your ankles in order to be accepted in society. Janelle Monae is a prime example that you can be different from everybody else and still have the power to be a trendsetter. She does what works for her and we love it. I wouldn’t change a thing about her.
So to all you women out there that feel the need to show every bit of your skin because you think that it will be your ticket to having a successful life, understand something: it’s not gonna get you very far at all. Your looks and your ass will not last long. They will get old just like you. Besides, there will always be someone that looks way better than you and so therefore, you will need your skills and your talent to get your thru. So if you learn anything from Monae, learn that your self-worth is more valuable than anything that you do to your body. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to look good but don’t make that you main focus in life. Know who you are and set a trend by just being yourself. Believe me, everyone will get it and respect you for who you are.
