Diy Whipped Coconut Body Butter

Posted on the 04 June 2013 by Gray Eyed Athena @grayeyedowl

When my sister was here on Sunday, I test-drove a recipe for making homemade coconut oil body butter to slather all over our sun-kissed skin… and it was AMAZING!

All you need is a handheld or countertop mixer (don’t use a food processor or blender because they get too hot), 1-2 cups of solid, unmelted coconut oil, about a teaspoon of liquid body oil like almond, jojoba, aloe, or vitamin e, and a couple drops of your favorite essential oil for scent.

I used Trader Joe’s coconut oil (the whole container), sweet almond oil (this is one of my favorite quick-absorbing oils), and essential birch oil with a tangy and refreshing scent.  Throw it all in a bowl and blend on high for 6-8 minutes.  When you start seeing air bubbles in the blend, you’ll know it’s ready.  My kitchen was really hot when I made it (it was 90 degrees f over the weekend) so the butter was very liquidy.  I poured it into glass jars and put them in the refrigerator where the butter hardened and cooled while we soaked up the sun.  Then, we broke out pieces of the hardened butter and held it to our skin where it immediately softened and spread in the most delicious and moisturizing mini-spa treatment ever.  Oh-so-perfect.  Our skin drank up the butter almost immediately, leaving behind only silky soft skin and the summery scent of coconut.
