Drabble (1)

It was from a distance that she saw him smiling, happily gesticulating and talking to a fine group of women. But he could never have caught her looking when he wasn’t looking at her himself. She felt cold and white hot at the same time; equal amounts of both. It was not her place to become this angry. He was not hers to stake a claim to. Yet she almost couldn’t help herself. He touched a hand, curled his arm around the back of a chair, laughed at a joke. He was well out of her reach, and she could feel the distance increasing with every one of his actions and any one of her thoughts. Had her own imagination gotten the better of her, or was he trying to deny it? She wondered if her feelings had made an alternate universe come into existence; an alternate universe in which different choices were made with different outcomes. For her there was only this one, and she would just have to learn to live with it.
