Experiences with Abusive Hawker, Mute Public and Police (Day 3)

Posted on the 15 October 2013 by Shruti2910

Today was an empowering day all together. After Ahmedabad Mirror covered the article I got a bundle of mixed responses from relatives, college friends, neighbors, and acquaintances. A few congratulated me for the stand and the other few were worried for my safety.
A section of them still believed I was getting in uunnecessary trouble and that I might end up with acid on my face or to the extreme - getting rapped by this hawker's men, eventually getting nothing. The majority supported me. A few inluential people also offered to help.

I went to Karanj Police station today to meet the Police Inspector M.M. Makwana.I reached at 5.35 pm and we were warmly welcomed, offered water and Fanta.

I was asked to narrate the entire incident again by the PI. When I reached to the part where I told them how I came on the day of the incident and a day before where I was fooled enough on the matter of filing complaint,  the PI asked me to chuck that part out of the story. He asked me to not to mention it in the complaint and instead say that 'I' delayed in filing complaint because I was 'traumatized' by the incident and took 2 days to take advise from my parents and adults of the family, hence the late complaint. When I refused to this, he pleaded me to oblige for it might cost him his suspension.

After a brief conversation with a few people, I decided to chuck that part as I do not think it would be wise of me to take a job and bear the consequences a fired PI would put me through. I am, at the end of the day a normal college going student. Also, this was a favor from my side to him as far as he promised this won't be repeated with anyone else in his constituency and that I hadn't bowed to his demands.

My complaint was then written on a paper by PSI who handed me a copy of the same. The hawker is charged under IPC 354 and 294.

I shall receive the FIR copy of the same tomorrow. When I informally asked the PSI when shall I be called to go to the court, he very honestly told me it could be any time after 3-4 years.

I am pretty sure I shall take it in the court even if I receive the summon after 5 years. But I do not know if I would be living in the same house, address of which I have provided. I do not know if the hawker would still be standing near the temple till them. I do not know if he has a house where he shall be summoned.I do not get why people including someone very close to me and my parents asked me to not reveal my identity. I do not understand why we as a society fail to provide a security to a complainent. I do not know if a girl actually does get attacked by acid or raped by the Gundas of people whom she has accused like a lot of people told me. How would it matter even then? Wouldn't it be better to live with a bruised face than a bruised conscience and self-respect?

What if he was some very influential rich guy? What if he HAD the power to hire gundas and harm me.

I wish more of us realize that it is not normal for any one random to abuse you or man handle you. Or even threaten you. It isn't unnecessary to not speak against such things. If you are reading this blog, I assume you are educated and fall under the 'enlightened' youth ccategory.

I wish more of us realize that it is police's job to protect us. And that going to police station isnt equal to getting into unnecessary trouble.

I wish most of us shall not stand like the mute spectators who watched us getting abused. That way, you are not being neutral or out of trouble. You are being a loser and a supporter of a future rapist or a murdered may be.

The police has done their part and am happy that my complaint was filed, despite manipulations.
