Finding Super Fun Super Simple Art with the Giraffes & the Birds & the Books

Be inspired and learn how to create simple art from book pages and illustrations from Julie Jordan Scott What books can you create art with today? I know, it may seem sacrilege to tear up books but hey - they would wind up in the dump if I didn't make art with them for ALL to enjoy, right?

One thing about being an artist who uses book pages as her primary media is... I have a heckuva lot of stuff to choose from AND I sometimes lose track of all those wonderful goodies that sometimes get hidden amidst all the other wonderful goodies.

This is why I am in organization mode - it just takes a while to organize amidst living the rest of my life!

I found this fantastic children's book about jungle animals and when I found the giraffe, I knew I had to use it. It has double meanings which I'll get into in a different blog post.

I cut it out and attached it to one of my book page backgrounds.

I thought it was goofy so I posted it on instagram, it was an immediate hit.

I cut out some jungle birds and added them to another book page background.

I love it perhaps even more than the giraffe!

I make the book page backgrounds almost like meditative practice. I use scraps and whatever is close at hand and just go for it, gluing randomly on old playing cards or last year's greeting cards or leftover cardstock. I have never tried a theme or anything as thoughtful as that - I like to see what the particular pages and words that find their way onto a background have to share with me.

Adding an illustration is a grand way to instantly have a fun new work-of-art to use in your own home or to give as a gift or to sell.

Ced2014Like I said, how much of a hit these are, I never would have suspected!

I would love to see what you come up with using illustrations and book pages. Let me know how it goes!

PS - I'll be sharing another post in the next few days about both images - so if you want a closer look or a larger look, come back another time this week - or subscribe to my twitter feed or writing camp on facebook where all the posts will show up in the RSS feeds.

Happy New Week!
