FiveMinuteFriday ~ The Joy of Quiet *sometimes Even in the Chaos*

It’s #FiveMinuteFriday free write time! <—click to tweet this!  5-minute-friday-1

Where a flash mob of folks spend five minutes all writing on the same topic and then share ‘em at LisaJoBaker.com.

Words from my five minutes on....

Quiet: I long for it and I usually have it after I do my morning rituals and drop Samuel at school. There is such a race from six a.m to 8 a.m. and then… I drive home and gather my heart up and sit down at my keyboard to write.

It is a sacred time, the quiet time I take to write every day.

Someone asked earlier on a writing chat, “What are your writing plans this week?” and I simply said, “To show up at the keyboard from 8:30 to noon daily.” Sometimes I’ll turn on classical music, sometimes I’ll turn on Gregorian chant or Celtic music, but it is always sounds that compliment the quiet and make it even quieter, perhaps because they  settle my heart.

I have a gift that may sound strange to you, but I have the ability to experience quiet in exceptionally loud places. In fact, if I am stuck in my writing my best alternative to sitting at home in my precious writing space but going someplace loud: a coffee shop where people are talking, perhaps playing instruments, blending coffee drinks.

My favorite coffee house in Bakersfield is right downtown and it attracts a lot of creative types like me. It can become quite a hug fest. We share the “What are you working on now?” talk just like in college when you walk around asking everyone’s major or what courses they are taking or what dorm they are living in this year.

This year has been different because I haven’t been acting or in theater at all. “Are you doing any shows? What are you working on?” and I have to explain about the skin cancer and the recovery. I don’t want my scar to distract audience members so it is better, for now, to stay away.

The gift there is I actually miss it now.

My brain has become more quiet with no lines or blocking to remember.

Quiet.

TIMER sings! I’m done with my Friday Five!

The guidelines for Five Minute Friday -

1. Write for 5 minutes flat – no editing, no over thinking, no backtracking.
2. Link back here and invite others to join in.
3. And then absolutely, no ifs, ands or buts about it, you need to visit the person who linked up before you & encourage them in their comments. Seriously. That is, like, the rule. And the fun. And the heart of this community..
