Rango Review, Reviewed from opening day 3rd MarchBy: Bazlaa Karim
Director: Gore Verbinski. Starring: Johnny Depp and Isla Fisher107 min, Ratings *** (3/5)
Lets face it, the reason we all decided to go and watch this movie was because Johnny Depp plays the protagonist in a western movie, and we all want to hear his silly remarks and watch his 'Depp-ness' unfold. I caught the first movie on opening day, luckily there were just less than 5 people in the cinema.
From a swash buckling pirate, to a lanky lizard; Johnny Depp voices the role of a suburban lizard, unknown of its own basic survival skills, Depp and the storyline, of adventure and survival fails to impress the reviewer. Almost capturing the storyline of the 2010 film 'The Book of Eli' where water is power, and what seems like a budding romance starts to evolve between Rango (Depp) and Beans (Fisher); the viewers of the film seems somewhat unsatisfied.
Verbinski, director for internationally famous movies such as Pirates of the Caribbean, the remake of 'The Ring' and the classic 'Mouse hunt'. 2011's RANGO is Verbinski's first all through animated film.
What seemed to be impressing was the unique detail of all the dessert creators that the animators have put in the movie. Human like features were not obviously designed in them, other than the use of opposable thumbs, however the aesthetic detail of the creatures were very one-of-a-kind.
What can I say? The characters and storyline did deliver, only sub par. The movie did however make myself and some of its viewers laugh during bits of its humorous sections of the film. You know those parts as the 'random', 'awkward' and 'uncalled' for sequences.
The screenplay writer John logan should be congratulated for the uniqueness of the film, however some 'funny' bits he though would be great, should just be frowned upon.
After 107mins of this movie I felt as if I should have watched it in a full cinema where maybe it would have been more appreciated. Nevertheless the movie had great potential and i feel like if Verbinski continues on with animated film with the same screen writer, they could probably create something awesome for future screenings.
