Gems from the chalkface #1

(source - gemselect.com)

As a teacher I hear a lot of gems, and I would like to share some of this week's with you. With one class we have just finished a module on first aid, including theory and practical classes taught in both French and English in conjunction with a colleague, who, like myself is well trained in first aid. It's a pleasure to teach something you know will be really useful, and may one day save a life.

So, now comes the evaluation - we are in school after all.

The following statements are quoted directly from my pupils' testpapers, with their permission (mostly):

What do you do if someone is choking in a restaurant?

- put a serviette on his head (??)

-pat him firmly between the ankles (If you hit them hard enough between the ankles I suppose it might make them cough)

-kick him four times in the back (nice)

-shoot him (a little radical I feel)

What do you do if someone is unconscious and breathing?

- Hold up three fingers and ask him to count them

What do you do if someone is unconscious and not breathing?

- put them in a recovery postion and sit on them so they don't vomit

- go to youtube and watch a film called "Staying Alive" (Beegees' biography??)

One thing is quite clear, I've already asked my pupils, if I slump too the floor in a messy unconscious heap during class, please, just keep away, leave me alone, I'll be fine, honest.
