Getting into the Writing / Journalist Business.

Posted on the 11 September 2012 by Bazkarim @BazKarim
Now i've come a long way since graduating last year. I feel like my goal to becoming a Professional journalist is closer to reach.
I still require more experience.
What I can say to people in my 'line of work' / in my shoes (graduated, worked, now studying again):
  • Build up your writing skills - Know how to write for your audience (styles...etc)
  • Know your stuff  - Dont just blatantly write on some topic you are unaware of. Prior to writing, research should be conducted.
  • Have a blog - Seriously, this helps a lot. Potential employers like to know that you have the urge to write and have a platform to do it on. (update it regularly)
  • Apply everywhere - You are determined and you know it, so show it!
  • Networking - Even if you dont have a job, it's great to socialize with potential employers, co workers, clients. build up that trusting relationship.
  • Confidence - Browny points are always given to individuals who have charisma and a 'go-getting' attitude. If you know what you want then go on a do it.
  • Dont stop observing  - This will relate to blogging, observe your surroundings and read the newspaper, if anything does catch your interest, try writing your thoughts down or write down topics that are raised.
  • Keep up to date - This is another important piece of information you need. Imagine ging into an interview and someone asks you a question on a recent event, and you have no clue what they are talking about. Now that is just plain embarrassing if you were applying to be a journalist.
  • Submit your writings to an existing publication - This could be for a freelance job, part time or you want to do it just for fun. It build confidence, and improves your writing. Eventually you will be recognized by the publication.
Now thats all I can share for now, hope it has been helpful.
Comments are appreciated.
