Greening My Travel

I am back. After a week long business trip to California, it is nice to be home and get back into my normal routine.

Greening My Travel

I had a nice relaxing morning which included going out to breakfast. I love breakfast, it is by far my favorite meal of the day. Although, going out to breakfast as a Vegan is not easy. Everything is made with eggs and milk. So I ended up getting oatmeal with the toppings on the side. It was a nice way to start my day and also a great way to regroup after a busy week away.

Traveling is exhausting and leaves an impact on your body and energy. It also leaves an impact on the environment which is why I try to take steps to reduce my impact as much as possible. Doing a couple simple things can make a significant difference.

Greening My Travel

I hate buying bottled water. Not only does it cost $5 bucks in the airport, but plastic water bottles are so bad for the environment and they use so much energy to make, transport and fill with water. Sometimes I have to buy a bottle of water, but I try to carry a reusable bottle so I can fill it with water out of the fountain while I travel.

Instead of making someone drive me to and from the airport, I take a bus or shuttle. When I fly out of Boston I always take the C&J bus. It leaves on the hour, every hour, and it drops you off at your specific flight’s terminal. The bus has wifi, a bathroom and offers refreshments. I can get work done, it saves me time, gas money and it is super convenient.
When I arrive at other airports, I typically schedule a Super Shuttle to pick me up. It’s a van service, that costs about $9 and it drops you off right at your hotel or the residence you are staying at. You end up sharing the van with other passengers but it is way cheaper then taking a taxi. They have Super Shuttles in all major cities. I find it really easy and it reduces the your environmental impact because you are sharing the transportation with others.

On business trips,  I try to participate in the towel and sheet reuse program. It is just me in the hotel room, and I do not need to have the sheets or towels changed everyday. I also try to turn off all the hotel room lights, heat, air conditioning, television and other electronics when I leave the room.

Taking simple steps to travel a little greener goes a long way! We fuel our bodies to run efficiently, we need to make sure we help take care of the environment so it can do the same!

Question: What do you do to make sure you are staying green, and taking care of the environment?
