Creativity and Surprises: What will you do to invite more creative surprises into your life?
I posted this photo
to instagram on a whim. I was looking for a photo that showed “skyline” and
thought, “This shows a skyline, so off it goes!” All of a sudden people were liking it and
complimenting it: the photo I hadn't even considered before I posted it.
I looked again and thought, yes. It is nice, colors are great even without a filter.
I hadn’t even noticed the lone sunflower in the middle of the photo until my friend pointed it out today.
“How funny, just one flower!”
The field was filled with flowers, but because it was so bright I couldn’t see much of what I was shooting while I was shooting.
Now that I see the flower in the middle I can’t take my eyes off it.
When was the last time your creativity surprised you?
What can you do to actively seek creative surprises in your life?
3 ideas for you to try:
1. Take photos of everyday objects you wouldn't normally take. Don't pay much attention to them at the time, but at the end of the day look at them meditatively to see what you see now, on a second look.
2. Listen in to conversations even if you've always thought it was rude. Notice what you pick up on from just hearing the voices, not looking at the people. Take notes on your phone or on a small notebook. Return later & see what you've sparked.
3. Before going to sleep, ask yourself a question in regards to your creativity. It should be open, something like, "What can I do to invite more creative surprises in my life?" When you wake up the next day, use the question from the night before as a writing, doodling, sketching, art journaling or painting prompt. Watch what flows - after all, your subconscious has been working on it while you weren't even aware of it.
