… that it was the first day of school and when I got to the classroom I would be teaching in, all the desks were one big jumble. Then I remembered I forgot to bring the course books and that they were in a classroom at the other side of the school building. As I was already running late, I had to almost dash through the building to get back in time. When I came back to my classroom the first group was already waiting for me and the group was enormous. Since the tables were all still in disarray, it quickly became a mess as the children were entering the classroom; they were nearly sitting in each other’s lap. Then I saw a few of the drinking and I wanted to tell them about the rules, but I quickly caught myself, because that wouldn’t be a very positive tone to set. So, I decided to tell them something about myself first. However, just when I was about to speak, a tall boy brought his hand up from under his desk and held a beer can up in some strange toast. I was just thinking: why would a 14-year-old be drinking beer at half past eight in the morning? I felt myself becoming angry and I wanted to send him to the admin and started writing a note.
Then I woke up, wondering whether this was a dream to warn me of how not to act on the first day of school… School’s almost starting again and I think my subconscious is just trying to come to grips with this.
