{Setting: English I class today}
Class: (whining and groaning about a final unit we’re doing)
- “Why are we still working?”
- “We only have 10 ten days left.”
- “Mrs. Hart, you’re doin’ the most!”
- “School’s basically over!”
- “Mrs. Hart works us to death y’all.”
- “Mrs. Hart, you’re the only teacher still assigning and grading stuff.”
… wah, wah, wahhh! (and so on and so forth)
Me: (crickets; taking attendance on my laptop, without looking up)
One student: Mrs. Hart, why do you hate us?
Me: (finally look up and smile) I don’t hate you. Do you know how much energy it takes to truly hate someone? I don’t think about you enough to hate you.
Class: (crickets and blinking)
Me: I’m kidding!
Class: (starts snickering)
Same student: (interrupts the snickering to address the class) Guys she’s not kidding.
Class: (crickets and blinking again)
Me: The world may never know! Now, let’s get to work…
