My Beagle, Bender, is the sweetest and most loyal dog. Though he has some annoying and bad habits (will eat everything in sight and humps strangers coming over to our house), I wouldn’t trade him in for anything in the world. We leave him alone in the house when we are out, and he has free run. He rarely gets into anything and is completely housebroken. He is an amazing doggie!
One thing though…he absolutely sucks on a leash. He’s a hound and is completely driven by scent so he’s constantly tugging on the leash and wants to go after anything that moves. I gave up walking him years ago and leave that job to my husband and kids.
Enter Sunny….the newly adopted Golden Retriever mix who has his own set of issues. (Just learning to be housebroken, chews EVERYTHING!) Sunny, however, is a dream on a leash. There is no training that needs to be done. He just walks where you walk and loves being outdoors.
Sunny is making me realize how much I like walking. I imagine that Sunny and I would walk a lot together if Bender didn’t get so jealous. Despite his pain-in-the-butt behavior, Bender, too, loves going out. So, for the meantime, we’re sticking to weekends so I can get help from my other family members to trade off with the leashes of two boys with very different personalities.
Thank you, Sunny, however, for reminding me that walking is really great. It clears the mind and gets you out in fresh air. I love that my dog brought this back to me. It’s been a long time since I’ve gone on walks, and Sunny is the best walking companion!
My song of the day is from the “man in black,” Johnny Cash. ”I Walk the Line” is perfect for a blog post about walking. So click HERE to hear it and go take a walk! You’ll be glad you did!
