Interview with a Med Student
Posted on the 03 December 2012 by MissliabilitiesHappy Medical Mondays! *It's the most wonderful time of the monthhhhhh!*
Hello and welcome newcomers and old friends! I am Elle and I blog about the fun of being a med student's girlfriend and an accountant. For this post I decided to do something different and interview Mori, my MS2 boyfriend, for the inside scoop on his life.
What do you like most about being a med student?
M: It's nice when we get free time, and I like getting to see actual patients. It makes me realize that it's not always going to be me sitting in a room and studying. That gets old.
What's the biggest change in becoming a med student rather than an undergraduate?
M: The friends that I have are very different. I hate not having a football team, which is probably the biggest difference. I felt like I connected with people in college better than with people in medical school.
What's your favorite thing about second year?
M: Classes are a lot more applicable to clinical scenarios. There is more patient contact. Also my girlfriend lives with me, that's nice too.
What's your least favorite thing about second year?
M: It's tougher. There's a lot more to each class and a lot of it is based on the assumption that you have everything from first year down really well. You should know it, but it can makes things very difficult.
What is your favorite memory from first year?
M: Anatomy, the first bit I was constantly getting splashed in the face with embalming fluid. It happened the first three times. We had it every other day so on the first Monday I accidentally did it, then on Wednesday my lab partner accidentally made it happen, and then on Friday my other lab partner did it. Each time I'd have to run out into the hallway and wash off my face in the eye wash station. It doesn't sound that great, but everyone was very tight in our group.
What has been your favorite class so far?
M: I liked Neuro. It definitely was harder than the other classes, but it was more clinically applicable of all the other first year classes.
For people who are dating or married to a medical student, what advice do you have for them?
M: I understand that in most cases they have a real job and what the student is doing is not really a job, but it's also not just college. It's not easy with the amount of material I have to read on a daily basis even if I can leave from class. Also I may be able to move around my schedule, but that doesn't mean that it is still college. My job is full time and on a regular day I have 4 - 6 hours of class and 4 - 5 hours of reading to do. It is similar to college during finals week, except it's every week in med school.
Do you have advice for people who are in long distance relationships during med school?
M: Both sides need to be patient because both sides have legitimate complaints. You need to recognize that it's going to be hard and neither of you can do anything about it. Don't fight about what you don't have and try to work with what you do have together. It can get better.
Any final thoughts?
M: Becoming a doctor is hard for anyone involved.
Hope you enjoyed this! I'll try to get Mori to do more posts for me in the future, but he is busy busy like everyone else in the medical world! =)
