If there was one item of clothing I couldn’t live without (except for my Docs, see D is for…) it would have to be jeans.
Let’s start with a little history lesson – the first jean fabric was from genoa, it was used for sails before being adopted for peasants’ clothing because it was solid and long-lasting. Hence jeans, from the old Italian word “Genuese”, meaning from Genoa.
In the Middle Ages Genoese sailors took their jeans to a French town, where they tried to reproduce a similar material, resulting in the denim, “de Nîmes” that we know and love today.
Jeans traveled to the States during the 18th century, where Levi Strauss patented the copper rivets placed in strategic places in 1873, the rest as they say is history.
The result is what has become probably one of the most versatile items of clothing, always in style, usually comfortable; they fit in anywhere, the epitomy of the globalization of the wardrobe.
I’m lucky, in that I can wear smart jeans for work, so it’s basically only in the height of summer that you will see me jeanless, and there’s always the denim skirt or shorts.
So, today’s burning question… how do you like yours? Soft and faded? Dark and smart? Slim? Flared? My current faves are a pair of faded boyfriends, as soft as fleece and comfy as hell, I'm sure they'll be fashionable again soon!
And you, what’s your favorite flavour?
