Loving the Moment with Your Child as He Outgrows His ASD Rituals

Posted on the 09 November 2012 by Juliejordanscott @juliejordanscot

My baby son I love youThis morning I made a stunning realization that some of the old ritual games I created for Samuel will no longer work because he has gotten too big for them.

I tried to switch one up today.

We have this ear cleaning ritual that makes him willing to have his ears cleaned. He even looks forward to it. We have always done this in our kitchen with a warm cloth after the tooth brushing and the face and hand washing.

We do this silly little “I’m going to clean your ears!” teasing game with us tangling together and me eventually getting the warm washcloth to his ears for a swish and a swipe.

The only problem is his arms are almost as long as mine and he is getting stronger Samuel at zioneveryday. This morning I said, “Wow, Samuel, that qualifies as my morning work-out! When did you get so big!?”

If we want to continue with his oh-so-fun, oh-so-typical of children on the autism spectrum activities, he will need to not play back as hard as he usually does. I can’t clean ears when he is so effective at not allowing my arms to bend.

For Mommies with younger children, it is true what they say – they grow up way too fast.

Love the moment you are in with your children right now.
